BMW’s most polarising face is about to get a nose job

BMW has introduced some controversial front-end designs of late, but perhaps none more so than that of the electric iX.

If the current, buck-toothed look of the brand’s largest electric SUV isn’t to your taste, the good news is BMW appears to be changing it.

However, the grille doesn’t appear to have shrunk, and it also will reportedly receive BMW’s Iconic Glow illumination to make it stand out even more.

Other visible changes to the iX include new, slimmer-looking headlights with new daytime running light signatures to align the iX with recently launched BMW products.

There are also new wheels and a new front bumper design.

While it isn’t clear from these photos, there may also be a refreshed rear bumper design. The slim tail lights appear unchanged, however.

BMW will reportedly rename the different variants within the iX lineup, replacing the current xDrive40, xDrive50 and M60 with the xDrive45, xDrive60 and M70.

In addition to new names, these variants may also receive power bumps.

Bimmerpost forum user ynguldyn, who claims to compile information from leaks within BMW, says outputs for these models will be as follows:

  • xDrive45: 294kW, up from 240kW in the current xDrive40
  • xDrive60: 393kW, up from 385kW in the current xDrive50
  • M70: 478kW, up from 455kW in the current M60

The forum user, who has previously shared accurate information on BMWs ahead of their launch, says the updated iX will enter production in March 2025.

It’s unclear whether there will be changes to the iX’s batteries. It’s currently offered with both 77kWh and 112kWh packs.

The current iX entered production in 2021, and though it’s sized similarly to the X5 it features completely different styling inside and out.

That makes it a bit of an anomaly in BMW’s lineup, where electric vehicles (EVs) typically closely mirror their combustion-powered counterparts.

Underneath, it uses a heavily modified version of the CLAR platform underpinning rear- and all-wheel drive BMW models such as the X5.

BMW is rolling out a new, dedicated EV architecture called Neue Klasse, which will underpin a range of cars and SUVs – potentially including a replacement for the current iX, which will reportedly exit production in 2028.
