Default Advice on a used X5....

    Hi All,

New hear. We have owned an X3 for around 12 months and it's lease expires in a few weeks. It is a little small so we are thinking of going to an X5.

I have found a 2006 BMW X5 E53 MY06 - 6cyl Turbo Diesel. It has everything we are looking for the only issue is it has done 230,000km. It does have a complete BMW service history, looks very well looked after and the dealer will also provide a mechanical exception report and a 3 year warranty.

Can anyone advise is there is likely to be anything major with the engine after so many kms. Would turbos need an overhaul??

We will only do around 5,000km a year in it as it will be our 2nd car and the primary being a lease car will be drive at every opportunity. Resale will be better for us in 5 - 6 years with an 11 year old car having done around 260,000km.

Oh and it is pretty cheap for a 12/2006 X5!

    Look forward to you replies.

    That's a lot of k's in that period..(~ 38K per year)..

With those k's, not just the engine will need some work at some stage... Things like bushes/suspension work, leather wear, then all the engine/pipes etc...

Having said that, might be worth costing up some major engine work and see if the cheap price + engine work/suspension etc will still make the car worth it..

On the warranty side, look at the detail VERY CLOSE. Most aftermarket warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on...

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. I had factored in the suspension. One good thing is the car has no tow bar so I know it is not 230,000km pulling a 2 tonne boat! I just wanted to make sure there were on inherent issues with the motors after 200,000km.

Also well aware of the value of "non manufacturer" warranties. That said I did have one once on an old commodore and one of the gear box gears decided to implode. New gear box was $1250 and it was covered...

Someone might be telling me to steer clear of it anyway, I went to try and have a look at it yesterday and the police had the road blocked due to a car accident. Divine intervention??
