can E36 parts be mixed on different year cars?

Hello,
can people out there please tell me if the 318i cars with E36 engines can have parts swapped from say a 1991 E36 to a 1993 E36 ? The parts I refer to are things like shock absorbers, front bumper and headlights?
Could someone also tell me why some E36 engines have timing belts while others have timing chains and how can you tell which has which just by the models or vin numbers?

Yes but 318i motors were changed early models were the 318i of e30 m40 that were belt not chain driven.

Headlights/ lights/ bonnets should fit.
