  • Z3 1.9 Catalytic Converter

A baffle inside the original catalytic converter in my Z3 has separated and it rattles when running at low speeds. New cats are not available at BMW and I understand that most owners install replacement units available with muffler specialists. Has anyone experienced problems with Cat Converters? I also understand that Cats installed on early Z3 and 318i were recalled by BMW USA in 2001 but not in Australia. The recalled cars were fitted with an improved Cat Converter made by the same manufacturer Zeuna Starker, USA. Any further information will be appreciated.

It'll probably be easiest to just get a highflow cat through an exhaust shop. Plus it'll sound better, depending on how good the shop is, $150-$300. You can get one for $100 off e-bay, but the shop will probably buy something more expensive, and then add labour.

I have read reports that non genuine cats installed on Z cars causes the engine fault light to appear and some owners in the US had endless problems. Does the High flow Cats available at Exhaust shops require the front pipe to be cut to separate the original Cat?
